The Royal Family of Dubai The ruler of this sheikhdom is Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who has ruled from the time he took over in August 2006 until now. He was born on February 14, 1949 and is one of seven sons from his father’s second wife, Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak;the elder son, Sheikh Hamdan, died in a plane crash in Switzerland in 1998. His mother, Sheikha Hessa bint Ahmad, passed away last year(2012).
He went to school at the French Lycée, in Cairo, where he learned English and French fluently, as well as conversational Arabic. In 1971, when he was twelve, he moved with his family to Washington DC, where they took up residence in Georgetown area. There, he attended St. Albans School for boys;now, the palace is located on that same property.
When it comes to his royal duties, he says, “I am just like any other person living here in Dubai. We are all equal before the law”. He is known to shop at local supermarkets、take taxis and eat out in restaurants with his family. And while he might fly in private jets, he often takes Dubai’s public buses to work——to the relief of commuters, given the city’s notorious traffic jams! But despite his humble roots——his grandfather was a farmer——he is very proud of his heritage, saying, ‘‘We want our citizens to be proud of their country, because we are proud of them’’.
